Technology in Education

Technology in education can benefit every child's future and way of learning. Some positive aspects of using technology in education is that it incorporates different ways of learning for children. It can bring in new and exciting activities into a classroom. With all the of technology these days, children can be creative with technology in their learning. One of my personal favorite uses of technology as a student was finding a Youtube Video song that has a special meaning to you. I am a huge advocate for music in classrooms. When I was in third grade my teacher educated us with The Beatles and we listened to their songs everyday. I was changed and motivated by The Beatles even still to this day. Every paper we wrote in third grade had the background music of The Beatles and it brought out my imagination in such a powerful way while writing. Another aspect of technology that is positive is how students can now listen to books. I live with a 10 year old named Tessa and she has dyslexia. Her brain works completely different from anyone I know, but she is so so smart. Tessa struggles so much while reading that she does not comprehend what it is that she read. Recently, we have been finding the books she wants to read that has an audio online for her. With the use of that technology she can comprehend the book and she loves it because there is no struggle. Technology can help the students that learn "differently" from others. Tessa is also a twin. Her brother Emmett can keep up in class where my sweet Tessa falls behind. Tessa has shown me in so many ways that there is not just one way of learning and not just one way of how a brain works. Tessa is extremely artistic and can draw and illustrate anything on paper. Emmett cannot draw or color, but when you give him technology, you see his artistic and creative side come out through pictures, and fonts and colors. Seeing my Tessa struggle this year, I have depended on technology to help her find new ways so she can contain all the information she is learning. It has been so beneficial to use.

I grew up with technology in my own education and I love learning about technology. While I think it is very positive, I can see the negative side. Sometimes I look around and realize that everyone is constantly on their phones. I myself don't think I can go a day without my phone and I see that as a negative aspect. I live with 7 kids and when the Wifi goes down, we all freak out. We turn on hotspots and make sure we have access to TVs, phones, video games. While reading the article "A Better Way to Integrate Edtech," I learned about the negative aspects of technology in education. It showed that teachers can view technology as a challenge. It can undermine a teachers authority in the classroom. Students no longer are learning from the teacher, but they can learn from anyone and from anywhere at anytime. With technology in the class, students can wander off from the assignments and not pay attention to what they are supposed to be doing. A negative aspect in technology in education is the use of all the new apps students use. These apps can bring out new ways of bullying in classrooms and also make a student lose focus on their studies. I myself have ADHD- an attention deficit disorder that leaves me with the symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. I have taken medicine to help me for years because of it. With all the technology in my life, it brings out the inattention and I find myself needing to take breaks from the use of technology so my brain can rest.

  1. I agree Terese! Technology has both positive and negative aspects. It is a great tool to use as an educator, and we need to capitalize on using it to the best extend. While, I'm also seeing children loosing social skills due to the screen time they are spending. We need to find that neutrality! Good job!

  2. I really enjoyed reading your blog. I liked how you took the topic and made it personal and used a lot of different examples of how technology can be useful and how it can really be a negative tool in our every day lives. I feel the same way about phones and feel that it can be a distraction and sometimes find myself needing a break too. Especially, if I'm on it and my little 6 year old daughter sees me on it. She will do something that will cause me to stop looking at my phone, just so I can give her the attention she is seeking.

  3. I love that non-traditional learners and those who have special needs have more access to academic resources! I also love that our students both in the classroom and out have access to online libraries, it's so wonderful to put this at their fingertips. I agree that everyone is always on their phone, because I am totally guilty of this! With slight ADHD as well and with more students getting diagnosed with ADHD I can see where more technology leads to more problems. I like that you have your own experiences to better help your future students with the diagnosis. Do you have any favorite educational apps?
