Learning Style

As a learner, I have always used visual and audio learning best. When I was a child, flash cards were an amazing tool for me. I would write down definitions and then study in bed until I fell asleep. My brain would retain the information and I would love when the test was passed out and I knew the answers. Just by taking the time and making the flashcards was an important tool to me as a learner. As a young child, I had a hard time reading. I saw a reading specialist and practiced very hard to become a good reader. In 1st grade, I had an awful time with the difference between B's and D's. I can recall having a card taped on my desk at all times that spelled bed. My teacher used this tool to help me visualize the difference between a B and a D not only by seeing it on my desk but also because the way she wrote the word bed looked like a bed. (I can still see the bed in my head today.) Another learning tool that I have used since the 3rd grade is listening to music while I write. My 3rd-grade teacher used to play The Beatles for us while we wrote and it really brought out my imagination. Because of that, I am constantly listening to music while writing and doing work. My brain is always scattered and I'm constantly thinking of so many different things that the music helps drown out all the other thoughts and helps me focus more on what it is that I am doing and what I need to accomplish.

For myself, a flipped classroom would not be beneficial to me as a student. For me, I have always needed the discipline of the time set aside that I need to physically be in a classroom so that I can focus and have no other distractions. In college, I tried online classes and I would rarely succeed the best to my ability because there was no time slot for my brain to focus merely on that class. My brain has always worked best when it comes to learning in a classroom with peers and an active teacher. Coming from a large household, I can see first hand all the distractions that one can face while trying to do homework. I'm a huge advocate for a safe, fun, loving classroom environment therefore, a flipped classroom would be quite the challenge for myself as a student learner.
