The pro's of public education has been on my mind so much this year. While attending classes at Trinity, I have had so much time of thinking back and reflecting my own education. I was blessed by attending Evergreen Park's public schools from kindergarten-eighth grade. I had a hard time reading and thankfully, my teachers caught it early and I saw a reading specialist from 1st-4th grade. Because of something so small, I developed a love for reading and never struggled when I got older. I currently live with two twin fifth graders who attend a Catholic school and have been struggling in school for some time now because their school offers no help for students like them. Their parents had to get their kids outside help and had to PAY for it. On top of Catholic tuition, they have to pay for their kids to receive help in the classroom that they need. With the twins getting older, school work is becoming more difficult and they cannot keep up. It's awful to see because they are too old to have them make a switch to a new school. I can't help but count my own blessings for all the outstanding support I had in my own education at an early age.
Another topic is speech. My sister could not pronounce her R's for a very long time. She was in speech until the sixth grade, being pulled out of class specials throughout the school week. She still to this day keeps in touch with her speech teacher. At the kid's Catholic school, speech is not offered. Parents have to find speech specialists on their own and again pay. To me, public school benefits a child so much. For myself, my own parents didn't realize that I struggled with reading and that I needed help. It was because of the awesome teachers in District 124 that helped me succeed as a student. If I didn't attend public school, my love for education would not be where it is today. Awesome teachers truly make a mark on children's lives. Throughout my entire college journey, I have constantly thought back on all the teachers who have gotten me where I am today. I hope one day to have the same effect on a child and to help every child succeed the best that they can. Education is so important and beneficial to everyone's life and livelihood.
